The No. 18 women’s soccer game went head-to-head against San Diego Christian College in the last home game of the season. The match went into overtime and senior midfielder Miranda Starbeck snuck the ball past the Hawk’s goalkeeper Katherine Koury with six minutes left in the final overtime to secure the Eagles’ win.
“We all wanted to make an impression in this game,” Starbeck said. “We wanted to come out early in the game and we were hoping to get some goals early in the game but we are just happy coming out and getting the win.”
Throughout the match both teams struggled to connect the ball of the back of the net, with both teams racking up 18 shots each.
Defense ended up being what mattered the most in the end. Senior goalkeeper Briana Williams had four saves throughout the night to keep the Hawks scoreless. Biola took advantage of San Diego Christian’s jumbled defense for Starbeck to shoot the ball straight past Koury after she deflected senior midfielder Amanda Lillicrop’s shot to end senior night on a positive note.
“Everyone on and off the field definitely put their hearts into this game,” Starbeck said. “It was a long game since it had to go into overtime, but I don’t think anyone had any doubts that we were going to win.”
The Eagles are now 12-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Their next match will be against Westmont College on Oct. 25 at 12 p.m.
